Chronicle of Cannes 2024, the state of the European market

Several colleagues from the  Reboot consortium   attended the Marché du Film in Cannes (Luis Albornoz, Sabela Vargas and Loreto Corredoira in the picture), where the FOCUS 2024 report of the European Audiovisual Observatory was presented.

Loreto Corredoira also published in a Spanish newspaper a chronicle on the situation or health of "European cinema". We highlight some paragraphs of her article  "Anatomy of European cinema"  .

The Observatory highlights a positive fact. In 2023, 2401 films were released in Europe, and more of them were European than American, although the latter are more successful at the box office. American productions continue to dominate the European film market, despite the purists - and I defend European protectionist measures - but reality is stubborn. "In 2023, European films accounted for more than a quarter of ticket sales (26.4%), while the market share of US titles reached a new high of 70.1%", these are the latest figures  from the OBS  .

European cinema is undoubtedly more glamorous, I don't know if it always has a better level; not in vain five of the major film festivals are in EU territory and move rivers of ink, but there is little turnover, or at least not enough to breathe or to stop depending on public aid.

Some data on the health of the European industry: France is the leading European country in this ranking of box office revenues, which is dominated by China, the United States and Canada. Spain is the 8th country in production (2019-2023), or 10th in the world in terms of number of screens in cinemas, but no Spanish film from last year made it into the ranking of the 50 highest grossing films, where there are 34 American films, 12 Chinese films, and some co-productions from Germany, Great Britain or Italy.
