Exploring Youth Film Preferences in Europe: Exciting Insights from Our Focus Group
During June 2024, at the premises of the Communication Department at the University of Vienna, the Reboot project conducted an insightful focus group series to explore young people's tastes and interactions with transnational and European film content. With 8 focus groups over 4 days and around 35 participants, the aim was to uncover deeper insights into young people's preferences, how they engage with films, and their sense of European identity.
Key themes emerged from the discussions:
• Some participants find European films challenging to understand.
• European films are appreciated for their philosophical depth, artistic qualities, and historical richness.
• There's a strong enthusiasm for genres like comedy and classic movies.
• Discussions highlighted diverse views on how European films portray cultural identities.
Our participants, aged 18-24 from Vienna, demonstrated a keen interest and knowledge, paving the way for further exploration. The open and friendly atmosphere fostered meaningful dialogue, providing valuable insights.
Moving forward, our upcoming phase in September will center on high school students aged 12-17 in Vienna, offering fresh insights into youth film culture.
Stay tuned for the comprehensive data analysis to be shared with stakeholders and the industry.
